Paper Specifics

A 1700-1800-word Position Paper, including a cover page. The word count applies only to the main document excluding references and appendix. The Position Paper must give a sound background to the topic and its causes and context, and conclude with suitable recommendations to be considered by the Symposium Committee.

Appendages:

-A references page done in APA format (in-text citation must be given for all referencing in the position paper as well), which gives full references for all works referred to in the text and appendices. (See APA guide in IVLE EG1413  course website under resources and guides)

-An appendix containing detailed documentation of all secondary research sources consulted by your team.
(No primary research is required for this project )

Style Sheet

The paper should follow the style sheet in terms of spacing, fonts for main and heading/subheading text numbering, labels for tables and figures, etc.  (See IVLE EG1413 course website, under resources and guides)

General Guidance

The Symposium Committee is impressed by papers of high quality, not great quantity. The word count must be adhered to, and appendices should be judiciously selected to support the main document well as necessary/helpful without adding unnecessary/unhelpful thickness to the paper.

In view of the limited word count, submitters are advised to focus on a fairly narrow topic for their papers, and cover this narrow topic well. Indeed, this is part of the rationale for length guideline: to receive papers that are well-done on specific, narrow topics that deal with Social Media in Singapore.

Those submitting papers are reminded that though members of the Symposium Committee may include some experts, they may not be expert in the particular field of the submitted paper. Explanations and background must be suitable and useful for the general educated reader, and jargon must be avoided. Glossaries are welcome, where necessary/helpful.

Papers must be based on secondary research  which may have been conducted outside Singapore, but your papers must be presented in a way that is clearly relevant to the Singapore context.

Plagiarism, whether accidental or intentional, is not acceptable. All papers must be in the submitting teams’ own writing, except for instances of appropriately cited quotations, tables, etc.

Recommendations should provide brief but clear guidance on what should be done, how, why, where, when, and by whom.

Papers must be written in standard English, in a tone appropriate for such a report. The Symposium Committee values creativity, clarity, coherence, and accuracy in writing and presentation.

Papers must be written primarily for local consideration and application; however, the committee recognizes that many issues have very broad roots, scope, and impact, so papers may also address beyond-Singapore contexts, where useful/needful, but such an approach must be clearly justified. Singapore’s acting as a model or leader on some issues may also be considered.
