Call for papers The theme: Social Media and its impact on our lives | |||
|
Few people realize the immense power that social media wields. In the hands of the right people, social media is a useful tool for discussion, to garner support for business, projects and issues of social concern. In the hands of irresponsible groups, it can only wreak destruction, chaos and encourage social unrest. Besides drawing attention to genuine issues, social media has at times also been used to ridicule and humiliate individuals. In light of the above, the government plans to do two things: (i) to mobilize the public to suggest potential areas in which social media can be applied to enhance social interaction and create opportunities (ii) to educate the public on the dangers inherent in social media and suggest ways to use it constructively, safely and appropriately To this end, the government will be holding a Symposium in December 2012, with the theme “Social Media and its impact on our lives” during which the public is invited to present position papers on the constructive use of social media to improve the lives of Singaporeans and the opportunities it can create. This is to facilitate exchange and discussion among government officials, national security agencies, grassroots organizations, the academia, social psychologists, business, media and the general public to promote greater awareness of the power and influence of social media in Singapore. The government is also concerned about the ignorance about, and the lack of responsibility in using social media as a means of bringing about changes in mindsets and policies. More information on the symposium is available on the EG 1413 course website under Call for Papers. |
