On
completion of this unit students should be able to:
-
understand examples of communication and discourse patterns in different
cultures and languages and appreciate the impact of the differences on
cross-cultural communication;
-
understand and identify some basic concepts of the study of cross-cultural
communication and discourse and some basic terms used in this study;
-
understand and describe the ‘rules of speaking’ in selected different
cultures;
-
demonstrate an awareness of the role of different politeness strategies in
different cultures;
-
recognize and describe the basic elements of language use in relation to
context of utterance, including function and the implicit;
-
apply simple procedures of
discourse analysis in the study of written texts, including in relation to
style and register and discourse structure.
