Cross-Cultural Communication and Discourse

[Lecturer]
Dr Deng Xudong

The study of discourse in cross-cultural contexts is an especially important endeavour in modern times. The reason for its importance lies in the great potential for miscommunication and misperceptions based upon differing norms of interaction across societies and speech communities. In a world that is increasingly smaller insofar as peoples from different societies interact with greater and greater frequency, awareness of these different norms is essential to mutual understanding and successful communication in cross-cultural contexts. This module examines patterns of communication and discourse in different cultures and languages to make students aware of differences which could impact on communication between members of different cultures. It provides access to a range of examples of communication involving different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and shows some ways in which linguistic scholarship can lead to a better understanding of the differences and of the ways in which they affect human behaviour.
