Week 1

This will be an introductory session in which we'll first map out the module itself, and then begin to think about notions of what Singapore Literature might be, and what possibilities reading and stuidy of literary texts might offer in contemporary society. If you want to get ahead, make a posting discussing the following issues before our first lecture on Thursday 11 January--this will free you from having to make one posting later!

Introductory Question

Have you ever studied Singapore Literature before--at Secondary school, Poly, JC, or another class at NUS or another University? [If you haven't studied formally think of something you've read or even watched]. What text(s) did you study and what were your reactions to them? What function--if any--do you think literary texts (e.g. novels, plays, films, poems) play in Singapore society?
