Quizzes

There will be two quizzes in SSA1206. These will be held during lecture time, and are designed to test some of the skills that would otherwise be tested during a final examination. The quizzes will be held under exam conditions (closed book, no notes permitted), and attendance is compulsory. You will only be given an excused absence if you produce an MC: in this case, arrangements will be made for you to take a different quiz paper at a later time. If you are unable to produce an MC you risk being given a zero mark.

Quiz 1

This will cover film and drama. You will not be expected to know in detail every single page of Emily of Emerald Hill or know every single aspect of I Not Stupid. Rather, we will aim to test the following through a mixture of short questions (which require you to write a sentence in response) and longer questions (which require a paragraph).

1. Your familiarity with the terminology we have used to describe the features of the play or film.

2. Your ability to apply the terminology to make a brief argument about how elements of the play or film come together in a brief clip or passage to produce an overall effect.

3. Your ability to relate a film clip or a passage from the play to issues we have discussed concerning the representation of Singapore.

Quiz 2

This will cover new media and poetry. You will not be expected to have a very detailed knowledge of every single poem you've looked at or every section of the blogs we've read. We will aim to test the following:

1. Your familiarity with the terminology we have used to describe the features of the poetical or new media text.

2. Your ability to apply the terminology to make a brief argument about how elements of the text come together to produce an overall effect.

3. Your ability to relate examples of poetry and new media to issues we have discussed concerning the representation of Singapore.
