An Introduction to Research

Our lecture will take a different approach this week. For the first hour of the lecture, we will be visiting the library for a presentation from library staff about how to access research materials on literary studies.

The presentation will be held at the Library Training Room, on the sixth floor of the Central Library. Try to be on time--you might want to check out the room's location when you next visit the library.

We'll then return to our normal classroom for the second hour and begin to read the Elaine Savory Fido article. We will be concentrating on how to read, absorb, reference and put to use critical materials in preparation for assignments 2 and 3. The article on Walcott we will examine will enable us to practice these skills. Make sure that you read the article closely, since we'll be building on an assumed knowledge of it in tutorial. In addition to this, go back to Hinterland and read the extract that we are given from Walcott's long poem "Another Life" (102-104): do you think this extract confirms or challenges Elaine Savory Fido's points? We'll continue discussion of this in the tutorial, so bring Hinterland along then.

We'll also be thinking over the use of proper referencing in MLA Style (a way of formatting your references), which will be of greater importance in assignment 2. I won't be reinventing the wheel here, and will be using a PowerPoint presentation from Purdue University's Online Writing Laboratory. If you'd like to review this ahead of time, follow this link. Note that for copyright reasons I can't download these pages into the workbin.
