Week 7: Stella Kon, Emily of Emerald Hill (2)

Make sure you have the reading done before the relevant seminar in order to participate fully in active learning.

Some Questions to Consider

One thing we might wish to consider is how different performances of Emily of Emerald Hill might change its meaning. In commenting on the Wild Rice production of Emily of Emerald Hill, in which Emily was played by a male actor, Ivan Heng, the director Krishen Jit observes:

“…what makes Emily new is that it is performed by Ivan Heng, who has emerged as one of the most accomplished and charismatic actors of his time. The fact that he is male, raises an obviously provocative image that engagingly penetrates the social and psychological anatomy of gender”.

Do you think the fact that Ivan Heng’s is male complicates your perception of Emily’s character? If so, in what way? If not, give your reasons for your perception.
