Examination

The examination will ask you to write two different critical essays which will be comparative in nature and each require the use of at least two texts.

The first section will consist of a single compulsory question, and will allow you to use any texts you feel relevant.

The second section will give you a choice of questions in which individual authors will be specified.

Notes

The exam is open book. You should bring the following texts into the exam room:

1. Jeyaretnam, Philip. Abraham's Promise.

2. Kuo Pao Kun. Images at the Margins: A Collection of Kuo Pao Kun's Plays, or an equivalent collection of Kuo's plays

3. Lau Siew Mei. Playing Madame Mao.

4. Maugham, W. Somerset. "The Letter."

5. Yeo, Robert. Leaving Home, Mother: Selected Poems.

6. Yap, Arthur. the space of city trees: selected poems.

7. Printouts of the short stories and original articles studied in weeks 1-3.

You should not bring critical or secondary readings into the exam room even if they are contained in your course pack.

Note that while the texts may be annotated, they should not contain added note sheets or substantial paragraphs of notes written into the covers or elsewhere. If you are in doubt about the definition of "substantial," please consult either of your tutors before the examination. Texts which do not meet the stipulated guidelines may be taken away from candidates for the duration of the examination.
