Tutorial Groups (2hours, every other week):

General Overview of the Module

While drawing on methodologies and approaches used in literary studies, this module moves beyond the traditional confines of Singapore Literature. We will thus examine the representation of Singapore, and of contemporary issues of importance in Singapore, in a variety of different popular media. After an initial introduction to the critical reading of cultural representation, we will explore traditional genres such as the novel, poetry and drama, as well as more popular ones such as film, and new media such as podcasting and blogging .The module is open to all students with an interest in literary and cultural studies.

How the Module Works

After an introductory lecture, we will work through a series of texts of different literary or popular cultural genres (genres are "kinds" of texts, such as Literature, Drama, of Film). We'll cover each genre in a two-week cycle of two two-hour lectures (which we hope to make as interactive as possible), an ivle forum, and a two-hour tutorial. You'll have a variety of assignments, which culminate in a final project on a topic of your choice, and there will be no final exam.

Learning Together

In both lectures and tutorials we'll assume that you've done the work of reading prior to attending class--whether lecture or tutorial. This is a module which sharpens your own critical judgment and ability to "read" texts which are commonly available to you, and you'll find that you'll get little out of the lectures if you turn up unprepared. Come on time with ideas, responses, and have something to say.
