Essay questions & deadlines

Choose ONE of the topics below. Each of the essays can be written either individually, or as a group assignment done by up to four students (I have modified this). The criteria for assessing your essays are given in a separate document.

Question 1:

How important are non-narrative modes of discourse in the study of cinematic discourse?

Deadline: 9th October (revised)

Question 2:

The beginning of a film from the perspective of discourse, story and text.

Deadline: 9th October (revised)

Question 3:

Cinematic features in a music video.

Deadline: 9th October (revised)

Question 4:

Discuss Bordwell’s use of the schema for the analysis of cinematic works.

Deadline: 23rd October

Question 5:

The prototype and cinematic characters.

Deadline: 30th October

All essays should be submitted to the appropriate folder in the IVLE workbin on or before the deadlines given above.

Individual or Group Assignment, & Word Limits

The essay can either be written individually or as a joint project with two, three or four members. The maximum number of words will vary according to whether it is an individual or joint project:

  1. Individual assignment: 600–1,200 words
  2. Joint assignment by two students: 1,000–2,200 words
  3. Joint assignment by three students: 2,000–3,200 words
  4. Joint assignment by four students: 3,000–4,200 words
