Ecological consequences of land use/cover change

My research activities center on applications of GIS and remote sensing to biogeographical questions related to spatial and temporal patterns of the landscapes. Within this scope, I have investigated various landscape related issues, from analysing historical forest coverage change, to mapping land cover and associated land surface temperature. Building upon my earlier project, ‘Land-use Land-cover Change and Its Environmental Consequences in Southeast Asia’, my research activities of recent years explore the relationships between environmental variables and infectious disease transmission and distribution.

In the last several years, I have examined the landscape determinants of the neglected tropic disease, liver fluke infection. Commonly known as liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini (O.v.) is one of the foodborne parasites that infect millions of people in the Lower Mekong Region of Southeast Asia. My publications on this topic have called for attention to the need for an integrated analysis of critical landscape determinants, including landscape attributes, characteristics and connectivity of the host habitats, land use, human behavior, and their relations for the understanding of O.v. transmission (See Wang 2012 EcoHealth, Ong et al. 2016 PLoSNTD, Wang et al. 2021 Parasitology International).
