ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Associate Professor Victor R Savage is currently the Head of the Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Deputy Director of the Centre for the Arts, National University of Singapore. Associate Professor Savage, a Singaporean, did his undergraduate Arts (Honours) degree at the University of Singapore and obtained his MA and PhD in geography from the University of California, Berkeley. He completed his MA and PhD under the Fulbright Hayes Scholarship. His research interest is mainly on Singapore and the Southeast Asian region ­ historical and cultural landscapes, sustainable development and sustainable urban development issues. He was made a Fellowship of the Indian Society for Environment and Culture in June 1995. He is a member of the Green Plan Advisory Committee on Environmental Education, the Singapore Ministry of the Environment and a Board member of the Singapore Environment Council. Associate Professor Savage is the Secretary of the Commonwealth Geographical Bureau, President of the Fulbright Association, Singapore and a member of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Board of Trustees. He is also a member of the Singapore History Museum Board and an advisor for eduMall, a joint venture between Paupac E Media and the National Computer Systems (NCS). Associate Professor Savage is Director of the Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography and a member of the International Advisory Board of World Literatures Written in English. He continues to work actively with the Hanns Seidel Foundation on environment-related issues in Malaysia, Vietnam and Myanmar.


Neil Coe undertook his Ph.D at the University of Durham, England, graduating in 1996. He then spent a year at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver as a postdoctoral fellow, before joining the Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore as a Lecturer in June 1998. His main research interests fall within the subdiscipline of economic geography, and include the dynamics of cultural industries and the service sector, processes of internationalisation and globalisation, and transnational corporate activity. He has published several papers on the software and computer service industries of the UK, Ireland and Singapore, and the Canadian film industry. His current research focuses on transnational IT-sector linkages between Southeast Asia and the USA.
