| Q1. | Please comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the module, and suggest possible improvements. |
| 1. | I've learnt a lot from this module in making the link between film and history. Very well done! |
| 2. | I Have thoroughly enjoyed this module and i have to say that its one of the best modules i have taken. it has taught me alot, especially not to take things at face value. the movies used in this movie were extremely enjoyable yet educational at the same time. the only complaint i have about this module is that now i tend to unknowingly anaylyse every movie i watch based on what i have learnt which takes away the whole entertainment value from it .:) |
| 3. | The distribution of assignments and the fact that there's no exam makes the module very manageable and yet the discussion of films makes it entertaining and engaging as well. |
| 4. | The module covers a lot of films but I felt that there was little room for in depth analysis of those really good films. Perhaps, it would have been better if the number of projects could be reduced so that we can look at films qualitatively rather than quantitively because I always felt that I had so many things to critique about in each film but the word limit confine me to just a brief review or summary of what I can write. The idea of discussing group projects in the Ivle forum is good, but I always felt that the possibility of free riding becomes a problem. Chances are, there are those who hardly contribute and expects others to share a lot of information. And students who hardly particapate still can score well for their individual project by relating to other people's views and comments as though it's their very own. |
| 5. | A new module to me which allowed me to relax after lessons |
| 6. | I like most of the films shown in the modules. Generally, the link between the films shown and the study of history is clear. |
| 7. | Very interesting and made me think quite a bit about how a simple leisure activity could have so much more in it. i bet this has been said a thousand and one time, but i'm gonna say it once more- "i'll never go into a cinema and watch films like i used to again!" = ] However, the history aspect of it might have been a little too over-loading and lengthy. |
| 8. | Very interesting course deliverd in oustanding and entertaining lectures. The essays might be challenging at times and the workload might be slightly excessive given that we had to write 5 essays and 1 project |
| 9. | This module is very fun as we just have to watch movies and write essays about them. But sometimes it gets rather tough as it is hard to link the film back to history. But overalll it is pretty interesting. |
| 10. | A very very interesting module!! Excellent! |
| 11. | History is taught in a fun and interesting media which is film. Gives the movies a new slant to them. |
| 12. | short one-liner feedback for each project would be great. |
| 13. | Very interesting view of how film teaches history. |
| 14. | Not easy module for a student without history background. |
| 15. | The project topics are very open-ended, which proves to be a both a good and bad thing. |
| 16. | The movies shown were interesting, and the essay questions made us look more in-depth into how the movies were related to history. |
| 17. | If it's possible, maybe the movies can be viewed with the subtitles on?makes it easier to understand the movie. |
| 18. | The module is simply too difficult. Lecturers should elaborate further on what separates a grade from another for the CAs.. and they should also comment on the projects individually else students would not know what is wrong with their projects/how to improve etc.. The lectures doesnt seem to be able to help students to find out what exactly makes an double tick paper.. therefore students who dont attend lectures could very well get a higher grade than other conscientious students. The standards that demarcate a double tick paper from a tick/tick plus often varies.. ambiguous standards.. in short, its really difficult to know how to score for this module where hard work doesn always neccessarily equate good marks.. |
| 19. | Highly enjoyable module to take but touches on some pretty abstract principles of history. A bit hard for non history students. |
| 20. | It should just be a film module than "film and history". Did not learn much about history from this module. Should make it into a pure gem. Cross-listing this as a history module makes history frivolous, and disadvantages non-history students. Refer to other modules offered by other departments like "Changing Landscapes of Singapore" which is a pure GEM. Film and history is neither here nor there: the informality seems like a gem, but the contents is more "film studies" than "history". The films are nice, but really did not learn much about history because it lacks seriousness in its lecture, and do not have tutorials. Do not know what the markers are looking for, seems to want us to read their minds then you will score a higher grade. There are some modules where you can improve over time as you learn new stuff; but this module seems to leave you where you started. |
| 21. | It is really nice to be able to think critically and learn history through the usage of films!! Very Interesting module indeed!! But hard to score for proj. |
| 22. | this module has very interesting and lively lecturers and lectures! |
| 23. | The lectures could be more in depth and thought provoking. The essay feedback are very helpful |
| 24. | It is very interesting and it is useful to the study of history because film is exceedingly popular since the 20th century. |
| 25. | Very interesting module. Esp the way it has been structured. |
| 26. | Strength: Interesting topics are covered. Enhanced my thinking skills and increase my interest in films. Taught me to watch films from other perspective. |
| 27. | The Big essay is too close to the projects. |
| 28. | fun, interesting yet thought-evoking. however, the dateline for the major paper cud b brought slightly forward as it was quite tedious having to write 2 papers at the same time. |
| 29. | Sometimes the films chosen seem to be on the basis of entertainment.. rather than that they really had relevance to the study of history. (such as batman and the elvis movie). Overall i love the module and it's the best one, with the most enjoyable & fun, i've taken in 3 yrs. |
| 30. | perhaps can include subtitles for the movies because sometimes the characters tend to mumble or the scene is too dark to see anything...it allows us to comprehend the film much better this way...the idea of breaking down the grades and providing after project feedback was a very good idea too...help us to improve.. |
| 31. | i really enjoyed this module because the regular short assessments mean that we're constantly learning instead of just putting aside lecture content till reading period starts. So i really felt that i learnt more from this module, compared tothose that have us cramming all info in during the reading week. The lecturers are very funny and the lecture content is very interesting and offers us a good background to the films, but i think it would be helpful to allocate more time introducing the concepts or theories that are to be discussed later. Other than that, i thought it was an excellent module. |
| 32. | the lecture is fun, entertaining and insightful. But too many students and too little seats. |
| 33. | Strengths: very interesting, especially the lectures. Lecturers are very humourous, which was a big bonus! Weaknesses: some films tend to be too long and quite hard to comprehend. |
| 34. | The Project quesitons could be more challenging and the reading more substantial. |
| 35. | There is no final exam, but many projects to do. I think the deadlines for Project 4 and the essay was a bit too near. I thought the choice of films was good and i was exposed to a wide genre of films that i might otherwise have never watched. |
| 36. | it was too challenging for me, the topics were brain wrecking |
| 37. | fairly interesting. however, alot of the times the lectures get off-focused. not much info was given as to how to approach in doing the assignments, but this had in a sense triggered students own critical thinking. movies screened were fairly useful. |
| 38. | Very interesting method of teaching, which captures the student's interest. |
| 39. | allowed me to gain a new perspective on the study of history |
| 40. | Showed very interesting films, films that never crossed my mind that they can be seen from a historical perspective. |
| 41. | It is very interesting that we were able to understand history (esp American history) better through mainstream films. The films and lectures were entertaining and informative. The challenge of this module, to me, were the project essays. They required very in-depth thoughts and analysis of not just the movies but the historical concepts and ideas as well.A possible improvement would be to raise the word limit on the essays. 500 words is just to short to develop some ideas. |
| 42. | some of the lecture materials were mostly about the film and it's background and not so much to do with the idea of history, made the projects rather tough to tackle when there is not much of direction given. But on the whole this has been a real fun module and the movies were all great. |
| 43. | the content of this module is highly interesting, and is conducted in a way such as to yield and sustain the interest of the students. excellant. |
| 44. | Interesting way of teaching historical perspectives, though the film part seems to overwhelm the history part sometimes. The lectures sometimes seem too trivial as well, although I don't know if there is a better way to go about teaching it. |
| 45. | fun but competitive |
| 46. | very interesting. lec notes can be more concise and detailed |
| 47. | strength- it is very interesting weakness-too many assignments |
| 48. | interesting. |
| 49. | Feels a bit distant from the lecturers. |
| 50. | The modules helps students understand more about how films can serve as a source for understanding history. Interesting. |
| 51. | Difficult to score because the project questions are very subjective. The individual essay could have had more guidelines as to its focus, because as non-history major, it may be slightly harder to understand the requirements for a history essay. |
| 52. | Interesting and provide intriguing perspectives on how to look at history. |
| 53. | interesting i like the movies that are shown in class. |
| 54. | has helped me to view films from a different perspective. |
| 55. | the films are interesting, but sometimes the themes in relation to histroy are hard to figure out. |
| 56. | It is very intereting and enjoyable. One of the funnest module in NUS. However it is very hard to score in its weekly projects. |
| 57. | None simce it demands more analysis on the students' part. |
| 58. | It is an intersting class, not your usual academic modules. However, due to its uniqueness, the demands of the class is not easy to grasp. |
| 59. | I thought that the module could be abstract at times, which was a refreshing change from the other more 'reading' modules that I've taken in previous semesters. I had to make an effort to think and give my own opinions, which can only be a good thing. Great module. And great films! :) |
| 60. | The moulde is so enjoyable. Most importantly, it changes my perspective for history. Alot of questions that required critical thinking were asked. Both Prof Barnard and Prof Gordon are so funny, just a suggestion to them: Perhaps after retirement, both of you can be a standup comedian duet. |
| 61. | Its a very interesting module and it trains student to critically evaluate what is shown in movies. |
| 62. | A very interesting and attractive module, but not easy to score. Difficult to decipher, at times, what project questions require. Focused a bit too much on American history too, for the last 2 projects. |
| 63. | very interesting module and the themes are very much enriching. The module could have more focus on Asian films and themes. |
| 64. | Too much weightage on forum participation. Perhaps more weightage should be given to projects/essay. |
| 65. | The lecture is carried out in a light-hearted manner, before it comes to the movies, gave us sufficient background and challenge us to think through deeper issues during the movie itself. Enhanced our abilitiy to look deeper into issues presented from movies in a historical context. Not so much about history the story itself, so no memorizing, but understanding what history is and the implications it carries with it. Learned a lot through the projects and essays... Besides the essay, everything else was wonderful... |
| 66. | Interesting module |
| 67. | No much to improve on. It is best that the lecture can be webcast so that those students who are late won't miss out important part of the lecture. |
| 68. | some of the readings seem not to have any relation with the movie or the theme. however, the films shown are excellent, and of a wide variety. |
| 69. | Good films selection. Interesting and knowledgeable lecturer. Very articulate and expressive |
| 70. | very interesting way of learning. something out of the box. |
| 71. | interesting way of realting history with the films shown in the module. the essay dateline is too near to the project dateline that had to be handed in on the same week. |
| 72. | Module is enriching and very entertaining. It is very special compared to other elective modules. It is effectively what i see as study in a fun way. |
| 73. | This module is a disadvantage for students studying science, engineering, etc as they are weaker in their language. However, is an interesting module which changes my impression on history(as dull and boring). |
| 74. | I think there are too many projects to do. As we have to do a lot of research, follow up in the forum, plus the projects, we have little time left for other modules. |
| 75. | The module is interesting and engaging. |
| 76. | relaxing lectures, interesting films |
| 77. | very entertaining indeed... |
| 78. | Guidance in writing the essays and interpretating the films. |
| 79. | ESSAY and PROJECTS ARE VERY DIFFICULT!! but it's really an interesting and enjoyable module |
| 80. | something very different, unlike any module i've taken before. not easy to think about films in the way that's in the module |
| 81. | strengths: interesting way to teach the study of history weaknesses: nil |
| 82. | it can be really nice to have something to look forward to on a gloomy monday. this module does just that. the module has rekindled my interest in films (and what they represent), and it gave me a "new pair of eyes" for watching films (a new way of watching, that is). |
| 83. | Great module, though more feedback on projects submitted will be appreciated so we know how to improve the way we write. |
| 84. | the lecture format is excellent, and having no tutorials made this module very flexible time wise |
| 85. | It is a very indirect yet captivating way to draw nonhistory students like me to draw me to understand history. The modules tackle important approaches to understanding the importance of history. |
| 86. | The modules is very interesting. Its different from the usual history modules. |
| 87. | NIce and interesting module. Keep up the "no final" exams practice. |
| 88. | interesting way of teaching about history. It may be useful to provide more guildience for the 1st essays in terms of requirements and expectations. |
| 89. | there should be 4 projects instead of 5. the deadline of project 5 was too close to the term paper and exams. |
| 90. | A beautiful if somewhat unconventional way of learning about history. I lerant more about the study of history in this module lone than i did in all my years of studying history. really provided invaluable insights in the historiography in a fun and informative way |
| 91. | this module is very enriching. I have learn to look at things from another point of view. However, the marking seems abit strict. |
| 92. | Non -examinable is good. Limited varities of foreign movies. Can also show European movies besides just sticking with American and a japanese movie. |
| 93. | nil |
| 94. | No complaints, was OK overall. |
| 95. | Fantanstic films and relevant references made to the field of History. Would recommend it to any student in NUS who wants an engaging yet enjoyable insight to History. |
| 96. | no comments |
| 97. | Excellent stuff, best history module I've taken yet, at least in terms of the fun factor. |
| 98. | Definately keeps students interested with use of films. However it may not be clear what exactly is learnt from the lecture as the point might digress from the central topic often. |
| 99. | Lovely |
| 100. | i never expected some of the films to have such strong linkages with history, or even the study of it. before i took this module, films like Kill Bill and James Bond used to be just hack and slash and action films. but this module taught me to look beyond the flashy facade. i enjoy this module tremendously! |
| 101. | Excellent lectures conducted, and the topics they covered enhance my thinking and more importantly, touches and overlaps with sociology and philosophy. |
| 102. | The module itself is entertaining, for the nature of it as film watching. Yet the most interesting part is how certain points relevant to the study of history can be brought up in different kinds of films. The questions posed to us and the online forum discussion allowed students to really expand their mind and to think more than they'd normally do, enabling them to learn many important things that are essentially important for students think critically. The best part is the different films used that actually allows students to look into their respective questions posed. By watching the films, we could well just entertain ourselves and be done with it but the questions posed really allow us to realise the little bits and pieces of meaning that can be derived out of normal films and it is not documentaries we are talking about here, but actual films in theatres. I'm simply thumbs up for this module, not because we can watch free shows, but because I believe we truly learn from it. |
| 103. | the ability to grasp what the lecturers really want in the essay assignments is difficult. |
| 104. | The obvious strength of this module is the interesting range of films showed. The weakness of this module are the lack of guidence by the teaching staff, the subjective nature of this module and the feeling that this is not a history module but a film critique of various genres where i didn't really learn much about history at all. |
| 105. | Innovative way to teach the aspects of learning history thru film. The university should definitely consider more such course in the future. |
| 106. | Interesting module with a good selection of materials. |
| 107. | This module is very interesting in its critical analysis of issues regarding the study of history. It opens up the mind of the students taking it and shows the study of history need not necessarily come from reading. |
| 108. | It is a very interesting module, you get to watch films and learn to analyse the film just like a historian would be able to analyse an artifact or a historical document. |
| 109. | A very philosophical module which draws abstract parallels to the study of history. Nevertheless, the module is interesting and piques the interest of the students. The films chosen are quite relevant to the themes at hand. |
| 110. | Fun, enjoyable, informative and thought-stimulating. |
| 111. | Film is a good way to explore the study of history. |
| 112. | The module itself is a great help to history students. The use of the forums to gauge class participation is a little bit unfair, as uninterested group mates tend to result in reduced forum activities. |
| 113. | the lecturers can maintain the student's attention with their jokes and interesting pictorials used in the lecture slides. it is rather difficult to score as this module requires alot of self studying. especially for a student such as myself, who is taking a history module for the first time, i find it rather hard to know what to write or what is the lecturer really asking about in the project questions. |
| 114. | It is interesting and well planned. |
| 115. | This module is very refreshing and fun. |
| 116. | It is a different type of module to take but it can be difficult for some |
| 117. | none |
| 118. | the timing is put too late in the day and we usually would not be able to concentrate |
| 119. | Films shown cut across the genres and the ages and have helped to expose me to more films. |
| 120. | strength: non examinable weakness, the need for consistent effort |
| 121. | N.A |
| 122. | module is challenging and can take up alot of the student's time completing the essay and projects. it's also difficult to score. |
| 123. | It's interesting and entertaining. I love it! I just can't stand the 2000word essay. |
| 124. | some of the readings do not correspond, or were not useful in our tackling of the essay questions. they focused mainly on the film instead of the broad themes of the module |
| 125. | i thought that the whole idea of using history to study film through non-historical film texts was quite a novel interesting idea. i thoroughly enjoyed watching the films, and the lecturers were hilarious. however, i did encounter some difficulty in trying to apply the concepts of how history is seen in such films, and had a hard time writing the report. but all in all, i really liked the module. |
| 126. | It'll be good if the tutors/lecturers marking the essays write some comments on it to let us know our individual faults. The online feedback is quite general, and doesn't really pinpoint directly the mistakes we have made. However, the lectures have been informative and interesting and i appreciate the effort put in by the two profs. |
| 127. | the films were interestingly linked to the study of history |
| 128. | As a history major this is definitely a new way of teaching and exposing students to History! despite the broadness and little direction we have with our essays it is still enjoyable. i still don't see how some essays get double ticks and some only get tick plus. the discussion forum is definitely a good way of interacting with other students without a tutorial and is advisable for other modules to consider using. |
| 129. | generally the module is a good one and presents another side of history that is often overlooked, and that the present structure is worth retaining. i also thought that the music played before the lecture and during the break gave lectures an non-conventional and entertaining edge. |
| 130. | the module is very interesting and the focus raised really provide me with a totally new perspective of history. and because of this new perspectives that are rather difficult to understanding, its a good thing that there are no exams. and it would help students alot if the subtitles of the show is shown. |
| 131. | the module is an attraction by itself! but i feel that a better lecture structure will be better |
| 132. | some movies seem to be stretching the theme a little. :| |
| 133. | very interesting and stimulating. |
| 134. | strength - innovative way of exploring history in a lighthearted yet critical environment; improvements - might be good to include teaching assistants in the forum to feedback on our discussions. |
| 135. | Through films and the bi-weekly assignments, students are made to see films beyond our normal viewing and forced to think critically. |
| 136. | very interesting, a refreshing approach to history, a little like an interdisciplinary approach joining history and literature... i enjoyed the module thoroughly. i loved every minute of it. |
| 137. | I lurve the module! Even tho my Mon's jam-packed with lessons, HY2243 is something I look forward to every Mon! =D Only (of all the modules i've taken) example of learning thru fun! It's also nice to see how all tutors & lecturers would attend almost every single lecture & we've got really endearing lecturers! Grins. Wonderful sense of humor. |
| 138. | The term paper's topic was a little too-open ended, while it can be good it can also be bad. Not sure of previous years' essay topics, but i felt not satisfied with the way i did the paper (i didn't even complete much of it), and i certainly did not feel satisfied with the challenge of such a possibly uncreative (some might think) question like "Choose one of the films shown in the module and examine what this film tells us about the study of history." i know that a deciding factor was to tie in film to history though... but otherwise it was a GREAT class, very creatively done. i wouldn't have taken it otherwise (except my paper part which was a bummer). Wish there were more classes like these in NUS to ease the monotony. i didn't rate another similar class i took, js2216, but it ranks up there as the best classes i EVER took (in NUS)! [this is one lecture i never skip.] on-the-side: some (ok, one) students i know from a different faculty doesn't get good grades for the 5 projects, prolly she doesn't write as well as Arts students (boo! but i am one. sigh), but it's sad there's no other way individuals like her can score and up the chances of a good grade. after all it is a fun popular class, and despite it being a History Dept offering, maybe could give more chances for people to show their aptitude and interest in film. i have no clue whatsoever how to do that, my bad, and thus my claim has no bearing. word. LOL, and besides you have too many people in the class already so grading is an issue (remember your fellow esteemed colleagues in the Soc dept with lectures of 900+ kids and their exam essays to grade) |
| 139. | it is a little too taxing to do a weekly forums. |
| 140. | one of the strengths is that this module challenged me to think beyond what a conventional expected approach. it raised the many issues regarding history and historiography and instilled in us not to be too obsessive about facts. |
| 141. | The topics are wide and varied. With a few interesting films and also a few torturous ones to sit through. hehe.. |
| 142. | essays are difficult for non arts/history students but it is a really interesting module that gets you thinking. |
| 143. | interesting and fun... love it alot.. garners lots of attention.. better distribution of percentage of grades |
| 144. | The module teaches students to analyse films and relate how useful they are in interpreting history. However, i feel that there are too many essays assignments and too few discussion opportunites. The online forum can only do so much, but not a lot. Tutorials might help. |
| 145. | difficult to see the link to history for some of the projects. lectures were not clear enough about this. maybe more should be lectured on the study of history for the benefit of non-history majors. |
| 146. | film show are great... but it is really very hard to link it to history |
| 147. | Entertaining, workload just right. |
| 148. | helps students to develop a thinking and questioning mind through interesting ways. |
| 149. | Very difficult on essay writting, however lectures are interesting and engaging. |
| 150. | Encourages students to think more about the movies than just watching for entertainment sake. |
| 151. | It is an interesting module |
| 152. | It is a very interesting which evokes our thinking. However, they should actually show us some films with no historical value at all such that we can tell the difference. |
| 153. | no personal feedback on essays. maybe a line or two (or even just circling trouble spots in essays) would improve essays greatly. feedback on forums? maybe every few weeks? we do not have any moderation or regulation on the forums and without feedback makes it harder to know if our comments are ok/too little/too much/etc. unsure of grading for forums too. |
| 154. | To let students to be more critical in thinking .Sometimes it's quite difficult to score for those who are not majoring in history . |
| 155. | This module is 100% on essay writing. Students like me who are poor in English command having hard time to score in the essays. Probably could introduce CA which does not 100% depends on essay. Lectures are funny, very funny! |
| 156. | Very interesting module. Trains the student in critical thinking and writing. Obtuse grading system. |
| 157. | thought provoking and encourages thinking, most different from the normal methods of teachings via knowledge indoctrination. but of course, by the very freedom of expression and styles of understanding it encourages, grades become difficult to expect or strive towards as that would require a level of conformity to the markers' bias. |
| 158. | This module is very interesting and enjoyable. It tries to stimulate my thinking process and encourages a lot of research. However, I find it difficult to relate to the lessons that we are suppose to learn as lectures and assignments are often ambiguous. The grading system also hardly allows myself to improve myself as everyone is grossly generalised through the grading and feedback given by lecturers. |
| 159. | The module stimulates alot of thinking and generates much awareness in otherwise ignorant Singapore students. (I admit that myself) I like the idea of online forum discussions because shy people can still come out and make their comments, which in turn promotes an interactive environment where students can still speak their minds freely. Perhaps the module was structured too closely to America, and could improve by studying more films pertaining closer to home such as Asia? Otherwise, a very open concept for students to explore not just film and history, but critical thinking as well. And very enjoyable! |
