Feedback on Project 5

General Comments

The last projects submitted were fine in general, but seemed to be written at the last moment or under pressure and deadlines that the students may have faced in other modules. In addition there was a tendency to (over) focus on the (non-existent or limited?) role of Chinese in the film Chinatown, often leaving little room to discuss the question being asked. Finally, many students had some difficulty in discussing all three films considering the word limit. While this may have been difficult, this was one of the “tests” since it takes into consideration how you phrase issues and express yourself. Overall everyone did fine, they were “money”. However, there seems to be “project fatigue” setting in.

Double tick: 85%

Total Money project.

Very well written, with a grasp of the complex implications of these films in both a historical and social context.

Tick plus: 75%

The same as a tick, but with a focus on how the only way you can live the American dream is by trying to re-create the 1950s nostalgically (Swingers), but at the end of the day you are fooling yourself.

Tick: 65%

You answered the question in relation to all three films, with a discussion of the American Dream, LA and Hollywood being included. The three films focus on the façade of power (Chinatown), Hollywood (LA Confidential), and the emptiness behind the image of LA as part of the America Dream (Swingers).

Tick minus: 55%

We have all seen the films and heard the lectures. There is no need to narrate the plots for us or repeat the lectures. In addition, a “tick minus” either focused on only one or two of the films or did not discuss the question asked.
