FILM AND HISTORY

 Feedback on Project 5

For Project 5, most students did fairly well, giving us analyses of the different depictions of the city and life in it. For Batman, some students answered that the film gives depictions of city life in a few eras, from the 30s to the 80s, and that it is a much darker depiction than Viva for a variety of reasons. Students took elements of the films as metaphors for larger issues, such as The Joker as emblematic of the disillusioned middle class, and Elvis at the time as representative of the American Dream.

Going further, students who brought up the readings and the analyses of cities by Canby and Mumford wrote projects with more depth. Those who pointed out that the films are perceptions of cities by their directors also fared well, bringing in the insights of past projects to bear on this one.

Breakdown of grades

(for in-between grades, the numeric grade is approximately halfway between one grade and the next, that is “tick/tick plus” means that you received approximately 65%, and so on)

Tick minus 50%

While we asked how the city is depicted, straightforward analyses that did not delve more into the symbols and metaphors of the films received this grade. Poorly written.

Tick 60%

Most students received this grade or more. You tried to analyse the films in light of larger issues such as the change in perception of cities, and information given during lecture.

Tick plus 70%

You most likely mentioned Canby’s and Mumford’s writing on cities, and thought more about the nature of cities and why the city becomes the focus of optimism or pessimism.

Double tick 80%

Excellent arguments, organisation and overall writing of the points mentioned in ‘tick plus’.
