Q1.  Please comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the module, and suggest possible improvements.
.Strengths: interesting movies. some of the projects made us think about interesting things such as stereotypes etc which will influence us later
.NIL
.lectures are too simplistic...no content at all
..
.Very interseting, in mixing history and film. Could do with a few more obscure films though.
.Its an awesome module; engaging, and a good way to get people interested in history. The profs are almost as funny as each other.
.Great choice of films, excellent linkage to topics and how they relate to history (duh), and FUNNY LECTURERS! AT LAST! YAY!!! Of course, watching films for class is, in itself, way cool. Thumbs up (in the air, of course)! Godfather: still watching you. Mahahahahaha. The lecturers stress on the penalty for plagiarism, so TOO BAD for those who blatantly cut and paste, even after seeing turnitin.com in action.
.I really enjoy this class because it is not only fun but very thought-provoking too. It's a good class to attend if one is interested in films and want to understand contexts in which these films were made. This module rocks=)
.too many films are american films. if a student wants to study american films with relation to history, he/she would have taken american history instead.
.The movies shown are interesting
.The module is not boring at all. very fun and enjoyable.
.It provide me another view on studying history through film watching.
.watching film is fun but quite hard in linking the movies to the project questions
.very interesting
.nil
.Enjoyable and interesting module. Enhances critical thinking.
.The study of the study of history is elucidated well through the use of film. It helped me approach other history modules more critically.
.Need more time to consolidate and reflect on 2nd movie before each project. ie. movie shown on mon, project due on same fri. Module is interesting and informative were learning is fun and interactive! Great Job!!!
.Workload is very heavy relative to other GEM modules. I think the tutor assigned to each forum group should be made known to each group and these tutors should be available for consultation or else what is the point of having tutors?
.Interesting and fun, yet very applicable to real life. Changes my assumptions about things around me and I learnt to see things from different perspectives.
.While watching films has been a novel way of having lectures, I feel that some topics (esp the last one on American Dream) are not very relevant as the rest of the moduel teaches on how history is learnt. All in all, I feel that the films and lectures are rather American-centric. Perhaps more could be covered on topics such as racism rather than the American Dream, for example.
.encourages critical thinking, but tendency to just focus on American history.
.Fun and interesting module. However the contents of the module module are honestly, not easy to fully comprehend nor score.
.Fun and definitely interesting. However, the module is too laissere-faire, as students are left to their own devices. Without comments on each project or guidance in discussion forums, the average student will find it very difficult to learn in this module. Lectures also seem to beat around the bush, and not address the topic in detail. Perhaps this method would allow students creativity to bloom, but on the whole it is difficult to achieve any real "learning". Also quite inflexible about collection timings.
.great module! less essays and this would be The perfect module. I count myself very lucky to be among the last batch of students to take this module under prof gordon and barnard. thank you.
.It's great entertainment. At the same time we get to learn the various approaches to history and better understand it through film. Pity though that the module will be cancelled?
.This module touches on advanced topics and helps in asking critical questions in things we usually take for granted. However the final essay and the project 4 and 5 deadline dates are too close to each other. I also have my reservations towards using the forum in IVLE as part of grading, as the motivation for posting ideas and comments will be one that is due to assessment pressures rather than real meaningful discussion
.Intersting module that encourages critical analysis of film. However, can imporve further by providing more direct links between particular film and concepts/themes discussed
.Entertaining
.Sometimes i really find it hard to know what is required to do well for the assignments. And some films shown seem to have very loose connections with written history itself.
.It is a fun module. Its weakness is that there is too much weightage on forum participation.
.Lectures were extremely brief and hence I did not feel like I was learning alot from them. I rather have a webcasted longer lecture which goes more in depth, and watch the films in my own free time. Essay assignments deadlines were also too close to one another. I rather have fewer essays but a larger word limit (not just 500 words!)
.The lecturers are very clear and entertaining. They make the lessons really enjoyable.
.n.a
.the film watching is very enticing to the taking of the module. It's amazing how history can be link to films i originally thought are merely for entertainment purposes. this moduls taught me not to be narrow-minded in my percetion
.NIL
.Watching flims every week is interesting but tiring as the semester goes... the fourth project could be further apart from the major essay. really, a comment or two in our essays might be encouraging for us students.
.interesting, induces us to think but too much workload
.n.a.
.relax and gives us space for our own ideas, opinions and express our own views.
.a very lively class to attend!
.very interesting and thought provoking
.The movies viewed aren't very edifying.
.Actually, I think the lectures do not say a lot about film and history itself. haha, but it was a great module!
.It has nothing to do with History. Or rather it seemed like a forced attempt to link film to history, which could have been done by any other medium. No feedback on how to improve essay. Extremely devastating. Perhaps it would be good to limit the class size
.Very interesting, enjoyable, funny lecturers. However Paper 4 and Term Paper could be a little more spaced out.
.Strength: interesting Weakness: not much interaction with tutors for discussion. maybe they can participate in forums too.
.MOst of the films do not have historical content to them. THus, this module helps us to nurture critical thinking and applications skills which are not so easily adapted in other history modules.
.I feel that the essay deadline should be after project 5 as it would allow students more time to work on the essay.
.Very engaging, thought provoking, encouraging critical thinking. No weaknesses and thus, no improvements needed. It can't get better than this.
.interesting links between film and history. nice and thought-provoking movies shown.
.Very interesting module.
.Very interesting and gives a great introduction to historiography. However can be a little difficult for non-history majors.
.-
.as a geography major who has taken mainly soci modules other than geog, history has proved to be a challenge. the questions for projects tend to be VERY open to interpretation adn therefore MAY result in a misinterpretation. should guide those without background in history a bit more.
.fun but not very informative
.the module is interesting but i feel like i have not learnt anything. and the marking is too strict with no proper reasoning for why pple get that score.
.It really expands and enhances my knowledge of film and history.
.in writing the essays it seems like not enough guidelines are given. Students are often left wondering what makes a good essay. It would be helpful if more guidelines are given or samples of what they considered as 'good essay' is provided - not meant for us to copy blindly of course but it'll be a start rather than groping wildly in the darkness wondering why a particular essay is considered substandard. I also do not find the online feedback given online useful.
.The strength in this module is teaching the student/viewer to question/analyse everything that he comes across.
.Interesting films are viewed but many are rather gross
.Time spent to analyse the film is a little short. Would have preferred a longer time span to further analyse the films.
.Nil
.The selection of movies are a poor representaion of film and history and almost make a mockery of the course.
.IVLE discussion is not suited for everyone, and personally, i interact better in face-to-face sessions, and will be able to articulate my thoughts and views better. Thus, the IVLE discussion group should be swapped for real tutorials.
.very entertaining. It really widen my perspective and bring a whole lot of new ideas
.Strength being able to allow students to link films and history together.
.It sounds easy. It's not. A warning label should be put on the title so that less people would be fooled by the module's deceptively disarming heading 'Film and History'. I gained a healthy phobia of films after take this course. That said, it's a really insightful, if exhausting, module. However, please be more indepth in the lectures. That way, we can avoid going to the forums wondering what we discussed is actually relevant. Oh, as for the feedback, maybe having a smaller class will help?
.Not much idea on what the lecturers really want in their answers to the project. Felt that even though I might have done what they wanted in their feedback to the projects I did not get the grade that i felt i deserved?
.A little guidance and clarity for the projects would help.
.ENJOYABLE.Great movies and great lecturers.I did not miss any lectures nor do I slept in any of them. The essay questions are really interesting and I enjoyed the analysing part. The forum discussion is also interesting and it allows us to express ourselves. Found the readings very very dry though and don't really know how to use it in relating to the movie actually.
.Entertaining yet challenging module that requires much critical thinking.
.Some films are deliberately fitted into the module and have no particular importance whatsover.
.Somehow I get the sense that it is not a historty module.
.its fun and an innovative way of approaching history but sometimes it's too innovative that the link of the movie to history becomes very vagu. I still think providing comments will help. Too many students? reduce the intake number lah.
.The movies chosen were relevant to the themes. However, the weakness is that some movies are shown in parts. As in part 1,2,3. Hence, those who had not had the chance to watch part1 before watching part2 might be confused.
.The lecture notes are rather vague at times.
.Enjoyable films. But a bit thin in the emphasis and explanation of academic material, given the significant proportion of non-history majors. In the feedback of projects, there could have been more said on the 'double tick' projects, to help students score better grades.
.Interesting issues discussed in the module
.interesting module, and forces students to use their brains and not simply memorize stuff. but workload is very heavy. thank goodness there is no exam!
.This is, in my opinion one of the best modules in the History department. Very thought provoking. I learnt a great deal from this module. Especially so as a keen student of film, who always views films to learn about its socio-cultural context. The use of popular culture films to teach the study of history, this unconventional approach to the study of history clinches it. I encourage the advertisment of this module as a reflection of the fibrancy and dynamism of the study of history, humanities and social sciences in FASS. I doubt there is any other module as this other Universities. However, the lecturers have to be clear that this is a module about methodology in the study of history. I feel this is a module about the philosophical aspects of the study of history and the lecturers should make this known in the module descriptions and the first lectures. Importantly, the lecturers should not downplay the difficulty of this module. It is not as easy as they made it out to be and I think they know it too. The issues in the projects are not as easy as they make it out to be. This is an excellent module but that does not mean it should be hidden that is also not an easy module.
.Good variety of movies screened. Enjoyable module.
.Interesting and very funny.
.Ridiculously wonderful! Apart from viewing films after films, we get to learn how to "watch" it according to the historical line.
.The module allows me to view films in different light
.its an interesting and lively module. a module which allows us to link a boring subject like history to films. an alternative way in understanding history.
.The module is really fun and ive learnt quite a bit from this module. Lecturers are really hilarious and they really make an effort to make the lectures more fun and enjoyable
.It's a pity this module is going to discontinue after this semester. It should continue with some other lecturers who are able to present the lectures and films in a similarly engaging and interesting way.
.I feel that too much emphasis should not be placed on forum participation. very interesting module, made me look at films from a different angle lecturers should consider changing some of their selected films though
.Linking the study of history to film definitely entices more students to take this module.
.the weakness is i guess that i have no idea how to do well (how to get double tick) :( still, this module is SUPER fun, it is the only module that i look forward to going. it is super super super and super. im so glad i took it this sem. nothing is more fun than this.
.teaches the learning of history in an entertaining fashion, allows students to analyze film on a deeper level. inadequate personalized feedback due to large class size.
.Strengths: interesting movies shown and viewing them from many angles Weakness: lack of teaching of the study of history so it's hard to link the movie topics to it
.The lecture itself is extremely interesting and taught me analytical skills. I learn to do a more indepth analysis of films that i will usually just watch without much evaluation. The assignments might get a little taxing, and time consuming. Perhaps there could be less assigments but more weightage to each of them.
.Well, less violent shows if possible. Explore a wider range of films.
.It links film, which is a prominent feature in every student's life, to history which is usually thought to be dry and uninteresting.
.This module is has taught me that history is not boring.
.the projects were pretty demanding as we had no idea what was required of us in the answers. and by the time we know, it's too late. the marking was also really strict. although the teachers were extremely good!
.great selection of movies EXCEPT "to live and die in LA". it should never be screened again. lectures can provide more substance, perhaps. less jokes? and perhaps the teaching assistants can be less rowdy during movies. :/
.Like the continual assessment methods. but, if student missed watching the film for whatever reason it is very hard to watch it in the lib because of the limited resources. more involvement of the lecturers in the forum is preferred.
.strength - challenges us to think about issues weakness - ivle forum tutorial format is sometimes frustrating. Especially when people do not really read your posts carefully, and only want to post their own ideas.
.entertaining
.its is really fun and interesting!
.Very interesting but sometimes so esoteric it is bewildering (or, so bewildering it seems esoteric). Lectures are perhaps a little too general. Still, very fun and enjoyable.
.a good module for students who don't have a history background. an eye opener module with regards to history in film.
.The module is very interesting, although sometimes it is difficult to relate what we learn to history.
.more detailed lectures
.Interesting concepts and well-organized list of readings. However, several readings are pretty irrelevant to the themes taught and certain explanations in lecture are not clear in linking the movies with concepts in history.
.it is a very enjoyable module which makes u think and analyse each and every source you read. this module has given me a different perspective of history.
.strengths: The lecturers make the lectures very interesting, and the films shown are just as good. Weaknesses: Too many essays, not favourable to non-arts students
.Watch movies and have a lot of fun; interesting
.Very enriching and provides an insightful view on films. Shows the various relationship between films and history well. Allows the students to think deeper and probe further with regards to any topic in the future.
.Great module! Advanced my interest in history and also in film. Learnt a lot from the module.
.Allows for a different perspective on how history can be taught, explored and studied. Films never sounded so interesting and I've never scrutinised films that much until i took up this class.
.This module rocks!! I love it!
