LA1201BI
BAHASA INDONESIA 1


This module aims to develop language proficiency in an integrated approach. Students will acquire language skills through participation in various communicative tasks. Through the exposure to the language, students will develop a general understanding of the cultures, the sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects of the language.
By the end of the module, students will acquire basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing to maintain communication on common topics.

LA2201BI
BAHASA INDONESIA 2

(pre-requisite Bahasa Indonesia 1/LA1201/SE1311)
This module aims to further enhance students' proficiency in the four basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will be exposed to more language functions and a wider range of topics. Through reading formulaic authentic texts, students will be introduced to the language in written form as it appears in daily communicative situations to achieve further understanding of the country, its culture and its people.
At the end of this course, students will be equipped with a sound foundation of the language to maintain communication on topics relating to their personal and immediate environment.

LA3201BI
BAHASA INDONESIA 3

(pre-requisite Bahasa Indonesia 2/LA2201BI)
This module is a continuation of LA2201BI. Emphasis continues to be on proficiency in all four skills, within selected range of vocabulary and grammar. Students will master language relating to a wider range of daily life situations and will gain flexibility in their language use.
Reading will no longer be strictly limited to what is contained in the textbook specially prepared for the class. Gradually, short selection from media and literature sources such as short stories, poems, announcements, reports and other short, topic-specific pieces will be introduced to begin to familiarize students with actual usage while not overwhelming them with new vocabulary and grammatical forms.

LA3202BI
BAHASA INDONESIA 4
(pre-requisite Bahasa Indonesia 3/LA3201BI)
This module will build on the skills developed in LA3201BI. In this module, students will read, analyse, and discuss texts from literature, non-fiction, and academic sources covering a wide range of subjects related to the culture and society of the target language. Selection will include text and passage from short stories, journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as audio-visual materials such as TV programs, feature films, etc.
The range of readings is intended, firstly, to broaden students' vocabulary and familiarize them with terms relating to many fields of endeavor. Secondly, the objective is to introduce students to various aspects of the society and culture as expressed by Indonesian/Vietnamese/Thai writers. Through exposure to the language as it appears in books and in the media, students will be able to hone their own language skills to be more applicable and practical in a workplace, academic, or business setting.

LA4201BI
BAHASA INDONESIA 5

(pre-requisite Bahasa Indonesia 4/LA3202BI)
This module will build on the skills developed in LA3202BI Students will progress from reading selections from passages to a more sustained and systematic encounter with the nature of the language used in novels, newspapers, Internet and other forms of popular publications, official public discourse, academic writings and business Indonesian/Vietnamese/Thai.
Students will progressively comprehend texts, not only from background and subject matter knowledge, but also from increasing control of language. They will also learn to handle conversation involving complication, in the form of connected discourse, and to make choices of diction, as well as manipulate grammatical features reflecting formal and informal registers.

BAHASA INDONESIA 6

(pre-requisite Bahasa Indonesia 5/LA4201BI)
This module will build on the skills developed in LA4201BI. Students will progress from reading selections from passages to a more sustained and systematic encounter with the nature of the language used in novels, newspapers, Internet and other forms of popular publications, official public discourse, academic writings and business Indonesian/Vietnamese/Thai.
The most important objective is to improve students' language commands in employing discourse strategies. Learner's autonomy will be enhanced in the teaching-learning process. Students will take an active role in selecting materials, leading discussions, and developing projects.

1251BI - SEA LANGUAGES: BAHASA INDONESIA 1
This module comprises two sections, i.e.,

1251BI - standard
LA
1251BI - accelerated

The LA1251BI - standard
This section is intended for complete beginners. The objective of this module is two-fold: oral proficiency and reading ability. Students will acquire language skills through participation in various communicative tasks. It aims at fluency in pronunciation, intonation within basic grammar and a limited vocabulary to cover a range of daily activities. In addition, students will gain the ability to read passages using these sentence patterns and vocabularies. Through the exposure to the language, students will develop a general understanding of the cultures, the socio-linguistic and pragmatic aspects of the language. By the end of the module, students will acquire basic language skills to maintain communication on common topics.
The Indonesian to be taught is standard Bahasa Indonesia -used by educated Indonesian, the media, schools, and government institutions - which is understood throughout the archipelago.

LA1251BI - accelerated
This section of LA1251BI is intended for non-native speakers and heritage learners who have prior exposure to Bahasa Indonesia and/or Malay. To be admitted into this section, students will have to pass a placement test. Students may contact the CLS for further information on the placement tests. Sharing the same objectives as the other section, students will progress at an accelerated pace in accordance with the development of their language proficiency.

This module comprises two sections, i.e.,

A continuation of LA1252BI, this module aims to further enhance students' language proficiency. Students will be exposed to more language functions and a wider range of topics. Through reading formulaic authentic texts, students will be introduced to the language in written form as it appears in daily communicative situations to achieve further understanding of the country, its culture and its people.
The module will provide a foundation to enable student to learn the language further on his/her own. Students should be able to comprehend and maintain communication in Indonesian, in an independent and effective manner on topics relating to practical situations.

The lessons taught in small groups give us numerous opportunities to
interact and the chance to have our errors corrected on the spot.
The class is not only audio and visual but also physical.
The physical movements aid in ingraining the language better.
This is because language is active and involves all the senses. In addition,
learning the traditions of the Indonesians alongside the language
makes the learning experience more vibrant.

I feel that this course has helped me to gain a deeper insight into the Indonesian
culture, on top of learning a new language. I would say that the Culture night
has given a great boost to the programme. It had been a really eventful night
and I am sure we would agree that the hours spent practicing and rehearsing

Well, I still persist on my stand that Bahasa Indonesia lessons are
fun and enjoyable. During lessons, teacher taught us now to make
use of new vocabulary to sing and act. At first, I felt awkward and uneasy,
unable to fit into the class. But with immense participation from teachers and
classmates, I am finally able to fit in as a group.On the whole,
I was really glad that I had chosen Bahasa Indonesia as an elective module.
I really look forward for yet another semester of
Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia.

I don't regret taking Bahasa module as my cross-faculty module because I really
learn a lot within a few weeks. Besides that, I also get to know a lot of friends
form different faculties. There are a lot of interactions involved and no one is
afraid of making mistakes because we all going through the learning process.
In a way this also helps to strengthen my friendships with my class-mates.
On the whole, I thoroughly enjoy my lessons, and I really appreciate the teachers
for being so patient with us and help us grasp the language well.

I find this course very beneficial to me, and I am going along fine with it.
To think back about 3 months ago, I could not even understand Bahasa Indonesia.
But now, not only I can speak it, I can also write an essay out of it.
