A) Main Components of Exam

The final exam carries 30% of the total marks for this module. The exam is closed book and has three components:

  1. Freely ordered multiple-choice quiz (8%)
  2. Sequentially-timed multiple-choice quiz (10%)
  3. Discursive type answer(s) (12%)

B) Characteristics of Exam Components

Here are the characteristics of the above components of the exam:

1. Freely ordered multiple-choice quiz

For this component of the exam, a set of multiple-choice quiz questions is given, but students can answer them in any order they want. In other words, let us say that fifteen questions are given (this is just an example; it does not mean that you will be given exactly fifteen questions for this component of the exam!). You can answer question 15 first, followed by question 10, then question 2, etc., until all the questions are answered. This component will be activated for the first 45 minutes of the exam session, and will be closed after that.

2. Sequentially-timed multiple-choice quiz

For this component of the exam, each question will be timed, and given in sequential order. You therefore have to answer each question according to the time given for it, and it is not possible for you to answer question 1, for example, during the time meant for you to answer question 2, etc. During the time given for question 1, only the inputs for this question will be allowed. This component of the exam will allow the showing of a few movie clips in an orderly manner, although not all questions will be based on the clips shown. This component will begin on the forty-fifth minute, and will last for forty minutes.

3. Discursive type answer(s)

This is the part of the exam which requires an essay type answer, or a few short answers written in complete sentences. The essay question will be compulsory or has limited choice. If the question requires a few answers, it will consist of a few sub-sections or sub-questions, each of which needs to be answered. The question or questions will be based on some general or important issues covered in the module, but not answered or not directly or wholly answered or worked out by students for the CA portion of the assessment. Technically, you can attempt this component of the exam at any time during the exam, although it is advised that you should refrain from attempting it during the time alloted for the sequentially-timed multiple-choice quiz (i.e. from the forty-fifth minute to the eigty-fifth minute) unless you want to quickly jot down some very simple points, which may be triggered by the sequentially-timed questions.

C) Timing

The timing for completing the exam should be clear from the above. But just in case you want it to be more clearly spelt out, the following is a description of what you can or should do.

A. First 45 minutes

What to do:

B. 45th minute to 85th minute

What to do:

C. 85th minute to end of exam
