Please note that
the various syllabuses of EL1102 in previous years were a little different
from, though not incompatible with, this year’s syllabus. Also note that the
exams were three-hour papers, and so had different requirements and formats.
From November 2000, the examination paper
will last two hours and will require you
to answer three questions:
Question 1 will require you to respond to any five of eight
short statements separately (rather than provide definitions as in earlier
papers).
Question 2 will require you to examine a short passage of about
10 lines and might require you do so some or all of the following: (a)
rewrite it in a different style; (b) analyse it terms of its general
organisation, its genre, the lexical and grammatical choices made; and (c)
evaluate it in terms of its effectiveness.
The other questions will be essay-type questions and will ask you to
discuss some of the major themes of the modules in relation to the examples
examined (eg New York English, Norwich English, American English in
general, Singaporean English, Old English, Middle English, World/International
English, Standard English). You are free to use your own examples too.
The
exam format will be discussed in more detail in Lecture 13.
